All scheduling for the production was set..<\/p>\n<p>I was feeling good.<\/p>\n<p>And then Ortiz decided that the stunt wasn\u2019t worth risking his life over.<\/p>\n<p>The director came to me\u2014deflated beyond comprehension after devoting years to the project.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cKatie, we don\u2019t have a film. It&#8217;s over\u2014we\u2019re screwed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But were we?<\/p>\n<p>Sometimes seeing beyond the situation in front of you is where the really great stories of adventure and transformation are told.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><em>Airplane Repo<\/em> &#8211; Discovery Channel<\/h2>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/BAr_06Z5lGI\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is going to be the hardest production job you\u2019ll ever have.\u201d The executive producer of Discovery\u2019s Airplane Repo, a documentary-style fiction show, wasn\u2019t kidding.<\/p>\n<p><strong>I\u2019ve never worked as hard as I did on that show.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>For four months straight (and I mean straight\u2014no nights or weekends off), we traveled around filming Mike Kennedy repo airplanes (not as easy as repossessing a car, by the way).<\/p>\n<p>Working on the production management side of this documentary-style fiction show, I was in charge of casting, location scouting, securing the aircraft, and getting last-minute permits approved. I also made sure all the cast and crew knew exactly where to be and when.<\/p>\n<p>And even though I worked like a dog on this show, I\u2019m thankful because this job more than any shaped my career in Television this is where I began to learn the fundamentals of episodic story-telling<\/p>\n<p>During rides between locations, the executive producer would break down the scenes for me. He taught me why the writers chose to go a certain direction\u2014and why it was important to the overall plot and series arc.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>The story here is that the hard parts of our lives often lead us down the right path.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><b><i>Alaskan Bush People<\/i><\/b><b> &#8211; Discovery\u00a0<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/O4GQwkm91jA\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Alaskan Bush People<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> tells the story of a family of nine who lives off the Bush\u2014just off the coast of Alaska and the Island of Hoonah.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The reality show depicts the trials and tribulations of residing in a remote part of Alaska without any modern conveniences like running water or electricity.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Working in the role of producer, we shot 16 episodes over four months. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Every morning we\u2019d take a boat from Hoonah to film on the remote island of Kantata Cove\u2014which is home to one of the wettest locations in the world. The crew and I spent long days in the endless rain, taping knee-deep in mud. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><b>Let\u2019s just say it wasn\u2019t a leisurely four months. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As a TV producer, the stories that we take with us when the show is over are often not the ones you see on television.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><b><i>Great Wild North<\/i><\/b><b> &#8211; History Channel (now on Netflix)<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/_v8-yhk0C34\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Great Wild North<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is set in one of the most remote regions of Alaska. We had a small crew of three and documented some of the last few who trap fur for a living. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><b>Because we were so remote, we filmed in a harsh environment and had to constantly adapt, create and build a narrative far away from any kind of support. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We (somehow) survived temperatures of -65 and spent five days in an un-insulated trapper cabin. Talk about survival\u2014our only concern was heat, food, and water\u2014and keeping ourselves alive. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When the temperatures finally warmed up a bit (and when I say warmed, it was still like\u00a0 -15), I spent the next three months working as a shooter-producer on the reality show.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>As a shooter-producer, I was in charge of the camera while also making sure the storyline of each episode was intact. Looking through the lens of the video camera, we traveled to different parts of Alaska\u2014from glaciers to the Yukon River to otter trappings off the coast of Valdez.\u00a0 <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What surprised me about this show was how much each of the trappers cared for the environment and the preservation of the animals. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The story I learned here is that some of the most rugged men are the most gentle of humans. To this day, this is my favorite show that I\u2019ve worked on.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><b><i>Port Protection<\/i><\/b><b> &#8211; BBC America for National Geographic\u00a0<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/1lvMaOviXPw\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When filming a TV series, each beat creates a scene, each scene creates an episode, each episode creates a season.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After working in the field for seven years, I took my first full-time post-production gig with BBC America, working on a show called <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Port Protection<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Port Protection<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is a remote town tucked deep into the Prince of Wales Island, Alaska. The setting is a remote town with about 100 residents who have only one quest: to live off the grid and have complete freedom (meaning no government, laws, or infrastructure).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Reviewing the notes and raw footage after filming changed the way I think about shooting film. <\/span><b>\u00a0Being in the editing bay, I could only create scenes for which I had footage. As a shooter, this experience helped me make sure that I get the shots to tell a compelling story post-production. <\/b><b><br \/>\n<\/b><b><br \/>\n<\/b><b>Sometimes we have to look back to see our way forward.\u00a0<\/b><b><br \/>\n<\/b><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><b><i>Revenant<\/i><\/b><b> &#8211; $132 Million Feature Film Produced by Legacy<\/b><b>\u00a0<\/b><\/h2>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/LoebZZ8K5N0\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><b>Spoiler alert: I wasn\u2019t supposed to be one of the people shooting video on this production of this Oscar\u00ae-winning movie with Leonardo DiCaprio. <\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Waterfall Scene in <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Oscar\u00ae-winning<\/span> <i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Revenan<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">t was filmed on the Kootenai River outside Libby, Montana\u2014one of my favorite places in the Continental US (and close to where I grew up).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I had signed up to be a safety coordinator, but after I told Director Alejandro G. I\u00f1\u00e1rritu about my experience in production, he handed me his camera and told me the test shots he wanted.\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What was incredible about this short experience was watching the director work. His eye, vision, and ability to direct and shoot\u2014while simultaneously knowing precisely what shots would work\u2014and what wouldn\u2019t\u2014gave me the ability to look through the camera in a new way.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>I also learned that those who truly pay attention to detail produce the best products.<\/b><b><br \/>\n<\/b><b><br \/>\n<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In preparation, the director had traveled worldwide, scouting multiple locations for each scene\u2014and didn\u2019t settle until he got exactly what he wanted. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Production is about hitting record\u2014but pre-production is where you develop a thorough understanding of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">how <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">you will convey the message. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><b>The story I left with after working on set? Good movies\u2014or videos\u2014begin with meticulous attention to detail pre-production.\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>P.S. No, I didn\u2019t get to meet Leonardo.\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><b><i>Hunted<\/i><\/b><b> &#8211; CBS <\/b><b><br \/>\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/jPPX1n8-fnU\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As a producer on <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hunted<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for CBS, I traveled around the Southeastern United States filming the greatest game of hide-and-seek ever captured on film.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I spent 14 hours a day riding around in a black SUV with former FBI Special Agent Maureen O\u2019Connell and Former Secret Service Agent and Author Evy Poumpouras. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><b>As the producer, I had to diligently create, track and document the story in a fast-paced environment.\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There were so many teams and so many moving parts to this show. Taking thorough notes was essential for the post-production crew to understand each move we were making so they could piece it together in the editing room.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But beyond the duties of production, spending this time with Maureen O\u2019Connell and Evy Pompoumpouras left a significant imprint on my life.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These two women are two of my biggest role models, both personally and professionally. Their strength, love for our country, and sense of humanity taught me the importance of a life devoted to civil service. <\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>They have become mentors and lifelong friends\u2014and were both a huge part of my decision to break away from television to work for the California Department of Justice\u2014which eventually led me to join the Army National Guard. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When your story unfolds\u2014it\u2019s often different than you imagined.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><b><i>Live PD<\/i><\/b><b> &#8211; A&amp;E Network <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/vhL9WqtAArM\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This was the first show I ever produced\u2014and walked from\u2026 <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As a producer on Season 1 of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Live PD<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, I spent four months living in Phoenix, Arizona, primarily with the Gang Task Force Unit. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But the story behind this show was how it exploited the misfortunes of others\u2014people from the most vulnerable populations. Because it was under a \u201cnews\u201d umbrella, the people recorded did not have to consent to be on film.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>I have zero tolerance to get behind networks profiting from others&#8217; pain\u2014so I walked.\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>In the end, though, I\u2019m happy I had this experience. This time brought so much clarity about the type of work I wanted to do in my career\u2014and led me down the path to take a job with the California Department of Justice (see next!).\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><b>California Department of Justice<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fighting for:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">affordable health care<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">protecting immigrants<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">environmental justice<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and the protection of public lands from drug trafficking organizations\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2026.were just a few of the projects I worked on during my tenure on the executive communications team for former California Attorney General Xavier Beccera.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I worked closely with the attorneys at the Department of Justice about the critical litigation our office was fighting for.\u00a0 Producing these videos helped our constituents understand on a deeper level why these issues were so important\u2014 behind the laws being written in offices,\u00a0 real lives of real people were at stake.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, as a content creator, this position came with great challenges.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I had been used to working with network budgets with big crews and an abundance of resources. Working for the state, I was expected to shoot, produce and edit high-quality content as a one-woman show. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But, over time, I trained and assembled an incredible team of production ninjas, and together, we were able to create compelling content for the Department of Justice.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here are a couple of examples of the important work that we did: <\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><b>ACA at Work<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Steven is one of millions whose life was changed by the<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/hashtag\/aca\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">#ACA<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Without coverage, his medication costs more than $140,000 each year. On November 10, 2020 the California Department of Justice argued in the Supreme Court to protect every American who relies on the Affordable Care Act<\/span><b>. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0The Supreme Court ruled in Attorney General Becerra\u2019s favor. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/VMdzsRZsCF8\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><b>The Fight For Environmental Justice<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When a cement factory tried to set up shop in South Vallejo\u2014a community already facing staggering rates of asthma and other health effects\u2014they fought back. The California Department of Justice was proud to stand by the residents of Vallejo.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Osu40T99l8U\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><b>Friends of The River<\/b><b><\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While working for the California Department of Justice, I launched Katie Scott Productions, and one of my first clients was a California non-profit called Friends of the River.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Friends of the River helps advocate for proper allocation of river resources to properly maintain healthy flow within river beds.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Department of Justice had worked on a case with Friends of the River to protect the Mccloud River and the sacred land of the Winnememwintu Tribe. I created a series for them called, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The State of Our Rivers and the Rivers of our State.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Producing this series brought me full circle back to where it all began with my first documentary, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=Ap4Fq9i7bx4\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Last Decent<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014about protecting rivers worldwide.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This was not only the project that launched my own production company but also the one that cemented the fact that working with conscious companies creating compelling content is my calling (and yes, I was going for alliteration there). <\/span><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/player.vimeo.com\/video\/488663219?h=b6bb0b9ee8\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><b>Montana Army National Guard\u00a0<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you\u2019ve read through all my past experiences and are wondering, \u201cHow In the world did Katie \u201cGo Guard?\u201d let me fill you in. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I\u2019ve always felt called to civil service, so I decided to enlist as an Officer Candidate in the Montana Army National Guard in December 2020. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><b><br \/>\n<\/b><b>Straight out of basic training, I was assigned temporary active duty orders producing video content while in O.C.S.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Although I had no intention of working in production for the Guard, it\u2019s been an honor to use my skills to benefit the nation\u2019s force even for a short amount of time- and the best part, I get to live in Montana!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Isn\u2019t that the way the stories of life go?
